Following are some comments on existing varieties for the purpose of comparison:

Wheat

EGA Gregory

  • Quality classification has been upgraded to APH in southern NSW

  • Maintains MR Stripe Rust resistance, rarely needing treatment

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, S

  • Very consistent variety across a range of soil types and environments

  • Tolerates heat at flowering and maintains grain size in dry finishing conditions

  • Tall variety, producing large amounts of straw

Suntop

  • APH quality classification

  • Stripe Rust resistance, MR-MS, significant infections in 2016 before Adult Plant Resistance became activated

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MS-S

  • Can have higher screenings when grown on fertile soil with low soil moisture

Longreach Spitfire

  • Consistent yielding variety from mid-May sowing

  • APH quality classification

  • Stripe Rust resistance, MR

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MS-S

  • Reported to have better protein accumulation than other varieties at the same yield

Longreach Lancer

  • APH quality classification

  • Slightly longer season than EGA Gregory

  • Stripe Rust resistance, MR

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MS, making it more favourable for stubble retention systems

  • Appears to have consistent yield and grain size

  • Short plant height relative to Gregory

Longreach Trojan

  • APW quality classification

  • Slightly longer season than Gregory

  • Stripe Rust resistance, MR

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MS-S

  • Consistent yield from a range of sowing windows, with high yield potential when sown early

  • Consistently large grain size, so sowing rates may need to be increased to achieve target plant populations

Longreach Flanker

  • Released for 2016, so limited testing in paddock situations

  • APH quality classification

  • Very similar maturity to EGA Gregory

  • Stripe Rust resistance, R-MR

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MS-S

  • Slightly taller than EGA Gregory; could lodge under favourable conditions plus leave large stubble loads

Beckom

  • Released for 2016, so limited testing in paddock situations

  • AH quality classification

  • Similar maturity to Suntop

  • Stripe Rust resistance, MR-MS, so may require treatment in conducive years

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MS-S

  • Short plant height, grains tightly held in the head

  • Exhibited physiological yellowing and necrosis prior to head emergence in 2016

Condo

  • Released for 2016, so limited testing in paddock situations

  • AH quality classification

  • Stripe Rust resistance, MS-S, so will require treatment for Stripe Rust

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MS

  • Very fast maturing, quick to emerge and quite competitive with weeds

  • Tall plant height, so therefore could lodge under favourable conditions

Corack

  • Early maturity similar to Condo

  • APW classification

  • Stripe Rust resistance, MS, so likely to require preventative treatment

  • Yellow Leaf Spot resistance, MR, so possibly an option for wheat on wheat with stubble retention

H45

  • Has been downgraded to ASW in southern NSW

The following table gives indicative wheat sowing times for Southern NSW:

Barley

Hindmarsh

  • Feed barley

  • Very good harvest index

  • Quick maturity and upright growth habit suits under-sowing with pasture

  • Not well suited to growing on wider rows where high weed pressure exists

  • Attracts a premium over Feed grade if Malt specifications are met, although cannot achieve Malt grade.

La Trobe

  • Malt barley

  • Very similar to Hindmarsh in growth habit and yield potential

  • Generally preferred over Hindmarsh for its malt quality

Commander

  • Malt barley

  • Suited to softer environments east of the Olympic Highway

  • Susceptible to lodging, especially in high yielding situations

  • Not suitable for under-sowing with pasture

  • Likely be replaced by Compass, if Compass passes Malt accreditation

Compass

  • Feed barley

  • More widely adapted than Commander

  • Much more competitive than Hindmarsh or La Trobe

  • Not suitable for under-sowing with pasture

  • Still undergoing Malt accreditation, so will be Feed in 2017

Oxford

  • Feed barley

  • Suited to high rainfall areas or irrigation

  • Needs to be sown early May to achieve yield potential

Canola

ATR Gem

  • Open pollinated Triazine Tolerant

  • Blackleg resistance, MR-MS (bare seed)

  • Blackleg resistance group, A

  • Has been a consistent performer

  • Most widely grown canola variety in NSW

ATR Bonito

  • Open pollinated Triazine Tolerant

  • Similar to ATR Gem, slightly quicker maturity

  • Blackleg resistance, R (Jockey treated)

  • Blackleg resistance group, A

ATR Stingray

  • Blackleg resistance, MR (bare seed)

  • Blackleg resistance group, C, being different to other Nuseed varieties

  • Performs very well in low to medium rainfall environments

  • Can also achieve high yields in favourable conditions

  • Low biomass with high harvest index

  • Less competitive with weeds

ATR Wahoo

  • Open pollinated Triazine Tolerant

  • Longer maturity than ATR Gem

  • Blackleg resistance, MR-MS (bare seed)

  • Blackleg resistance group, A

  • High yield potential, but more suited to high rainfall areas

SF Edimax CL

  • Hybrid Clearfield

  • Winter habit, can be sown from February to May
