Early Nitrogen Applications on Canola
Many canola crops have had Nitrogen applied prior to or during sowing. In most cases the canola has accessed this Nitrogen and has responded with rapid growth. Canola crops which have not had any Nitrogen applied to date, should be topdressed prior to the next significant rainfall event. Early Nitrogen will promote root and top growth, leading to better root exploration of the soil profile, resulting in development of a crop canopy that can better compete with weeds.
Final applications of Nitrogen should be made prior to bolting, with quantities based on realistic target yields, soil fertility, soil moisture, plus forecast seasonal conditions.
