Yield Mapping Checklist

As harvest begins in the region, it is important to ensure that headers are recording yield data. The adoption of variable rate application of inputs will become more widespread in the years to come, as technology improves and newer machinery becomes available. Therefore, it is vital to have several years’ worth of yield maps which can be used to identify paddock variation to create accurate zones within paddocks. From these zones, prescription maps can be developed.

The creation of accurate yield maps is relatively simple to achieve if a few key elements are considered before and during harvest. The most critical of these elements which need to be considered are ensuring that data can be recorded and accessed post-harvest, plus accurate calibration of the yield monitor:

  • Ensure there is enough memory to store the data for the coming harvest, or install a new USB stick

  • Provide all harvest contractors with a USB stick

  • Make sure all cables are connected, functioning and yield data is being recorded with GPS coordinates

  • Check that the width of the cutter bar is accurate, and the recording engages/disengages at the correct height

  • Calibrate the yield monitor for each crop type, every season

  • Use accurate scales on a chaser bin/truck or use the silo’s weighbridge

  • Collect USB sticks from contractors before they leave

  • Calculate total tonnes harvested so that the accuracy of the yield monitor can be determined and potentially scaled

  • Provide the yield data to a Rural Management Strategies consultant in order that a harvest summary report can be generated
