Canola Variety Update (November 2019)

2 PIC - Canola 3 (2).jpg

Open pollinated TT canola varieties have comprised the majority of the canola plantings in southern NSW for many years. This has most likely come to an end, as there is now a wide range of hybrids that cover all herbicide tolerance groups and all maturities. The price of seed for OP canola varieties has also increased to around $16-20/kg with an EPR of $5/t.

During the past two years, the yield gap between the few remaining OP TTs and the hybrid TTs has been consistent and large enough to cover the cost of the seed at worst. In addition, the extra biomass from the hybrid varieties has provided increased opportunity to cut hay from crops with poor grain yield potential.

Varieties such as ATR Bonito and ATR Mako have largely been outclassed by hybrid TTs. For those with ATR Stingray on hand, it may continue to have a fit as a low cost option in lower rainfall environments. ATR Wahoo still has a place as a low cost early sowing option in lower rainfall environments. However, SF Ignite or 45Y91 can also be sown early and may be more suitable in higher rainfall areas.

It is becoming clearer that canola should be grown only under high yield potential situations of adequate stored soil moisture and Nitrogen in low rainfall environments.

Victory canola lines are an option for those close to an AWB delivery point, as they are part of a closed loop marketing system. Generally, the premium paid for such specialty crops indicates that there is a yield penalty compared to mainstream varieties, however as stated previously, paddock history and other management factors will have the greatest influence on yield.

Two advantages of the Victory system are the ability to switch varieties to suit the sowing date, plus the option to pay a reduced upfront price for the seed, which is offset by a reduction in the price premium received for the grain.

Following are some available Victory lines:

Victory V7503CL – New Release

  • Hybrid Clearfield variety

  • Mid maturity

  • Limited performance and disease resistance data available, claimed to yield only 3% less than 45Y91

  • Blackleg rating R-MR

  • Seed can be swapped to another Victory variety if rain does not allow early sowing, or returned without charge if insufficient rain falls to sow

  • Seed cost will be $29.50/kg with a $60/t premium, or $10/kg with a $10/t premium

Victory V7001CL

  • Hybrid Clearfield variety

  • Mid-late maturity, slow phenology rating

  • Approximately 10-15% lower yielding than leading CL hybrid varieties from NVT data

  • Blackleg rating MR

  • Seed can be swapped to another Victory variety if rain does not allow early sowing, or returned without charge if insufficient rain falls to sow

  • Seed cost will be $29.50/kg with a $60/t premium, or $10/kg with a $10/t premium

Roundup Ready Varieties

The release of TruFlex varieties provides a wider window for weed control in Roundup Ready canola varieties. The TrueFlex gene allows Roundup Ready herbicide to be applied up until first flower and for higher rates to be applied.

Whilst this is an advantage, there is a significant discount for GM varieties, it increases the pressure on Glyphosate and the risk of developing resistance. Given the reliance on Glyphosate in cropping systems already, it would seem short sighted to grow Roundup Ready canola, unless it is part of a very structured programme, designed to control a specific weed issue.
