New Crop Herbicide Products

A number of new herbicide products have either been released recently, or are expected to be released for the 2017 cropping period. The following products may be useful in specific circumstances, however the cost of new products should be compared against existing herbicide options, which may be more cost effective.

Butisan

  • Group K herbicide produced by BASF

  • Active ingredient 500 g/L Metazachlor

  • Used for pre-emergent grass weed control in Canola

  • Target weed species include ryegrass, wild oats and wireweed

  • Application rate 1.5 – 1.8 L/ha, incorporated by sowing (IBS)

  • 1.8 L/ha rate costs $45 /ha

  • Grazing WHP is 12 weeks

  • Registered in all Canola systems

  • Could be a useful additional control measure for grass weed populations with suspected or confirmed herbicide resistance to other herbicide groups

  • Not recommended where other Group K products are relied upon in cereals

Rexade

  • Group B + Group I herbicide produced by Dow Agrosciences

  • Registration expected winter 2017

  • Active ingredients 150 g/kg Pyroxsulam + 50 g/kg Arylex

  • Used for post-emergent grass and broadleaf weed control in Wheat and Triticale

  • Target weed species include wild oats, brome grass, annual phalaris, mallow, fumitory and milk thistle

  • Application rate 100 g/ha, early post-emergent (EPE)

  • Requires 0.2% BS1000

  • 100 ml/ha is estimated to cost $34 /ha

  • Crop growth stage 3 leaf to first node

  • May provide an option for controlling wild oats resistant to Group A ‘Fop’ herbicides

Talinor

  • Group C + Group H herbicide produced by Syngenta

  • Registration expected in May 2017

  • Active ingredients 37.5 g/L Bicyclopyrone + 175 g/L Bromoxynil

  • Used for post-emergent broadleaf weed control in Wheat and Barley

  • Target weed species include bifora, fumitory, wild radish and mustards

  • Application rate 0.5 – 1.2 L/ha, early post-emergent (EPE)

  • Requires 1% Hasten or 0.5% Adigor

  • 750 ml/ha rate costs $19 /ha

  • Crop stage is 2 leaf to second node

  • Must be applied to small weeds. More cost effective options are available for the target weed spectrum in the absence of herbicide resistance.

Pixxaro

  • Group I herbicide produced by Dow Agrosciences.

  • Registration expected spring 2017

  • Active ingredients 250 g/L Fluroxypr + 16.25 g/L Arylex

  • Used for post-emergent broadleaf weed control in Wheat, Barley, Oats and Triticale

  • Target weed species include mallow, fumitory and volunteer legumes

  • Application rate 200 – 400 ml/ha, early post-emergent (EPE)

  • Requires 0.5% Uptake Oil

  • Requires addition of MCPA for effective control of many target weeds

  • Application cost unknown at present

  • Crop growth stage 3 leaf to flag leaf emergence

  • Will also be registered for fallow weed control. Likely to be strong on mallow.

Arcade

  • Group J herbicide produced by Syngenta

  • Active ingredient 800 g/L Prosulfocarb

  • Used for pre-emergent ryegrass control in Wheat and Barley

  • Target weed species is ryegrass

  • Application rate 2.5 – 3.0 L/ha, incorporated by sowing (IBS)

  • 2.5 L/ha rate provides suppression only

  • 3.0 L/ha rate costs $33 /ha

  • Prosulfocarb is the less soluble component of Boxer Gold. Likely to have lower risk of crop injury compared to Boxer Gold, on light soils where heavy rain is experienced

Countdown

  • Group J herbicide produced by Adama

  • Active ingredient 800 g/L Prosulfocarb

  • Used for pre-emergent ryegrass control in Wheat and Barley

  • Target weed species is ryegrass

  • Application rate 2.5 L/ha, incorporated by sowing (IBS)

  • 2.5 L/ha rate provides suppression only

  • 2.5 L/ha rate costs $27 /ha

  • This product has the same active and concentration as Arcade
