New Herbicide Products

A number of herbicide products have been released recently for broadleaf weed control in crops. The following products may be useful in specific circumstances. However, when targeting low populations of small broadleaf weeds, there are likely to be more cost effective options than these products.

Triathlon

  • Produced by Adama

  • Active ingredient 250 g/L MCPA LVE + 150 g/L Bromoxynil + 25 g/L Diflufenican

  • Used for broadleaf weed control in wheat, barley and triticale

  • Target weed species include Wild Radish, Mustards, Shepherd’s Purse, Capeweed and others.

  • Application rate 500 – 1,000 ml/ha

  • 750 ml/ha rate costs $12.40/ha

  • Crop growth stage 3 leaf to end of tillering

  • Product competitor to Tigrex, with additional Mode of Action

  • May be suitable where Diflufenican resistance is suspected

  • Significant price premium compared to Tigrex

Forage Max

  • Produced by Dow AgroSciences

  • Active ingredients 100 g/L Halauxifen + 50 g/L Aminopyralid

  • Used for broadleaf weed control in forage brassica

  • Target weeds include Capeweed, Fat Hen, Fumitory, Thistles, Mallow

  • Application rate 100 ml/ha

  • Requires 1.0% Uptake Oil

  • 100 ml/ha rate costs $40/ha

  • Crop growth stage 4 leaf to 8 leaf

  • Not suitable for use in canola

Vortex

  • Produced by Adama

  • Active ingredients 6.25 g/L Florasulam + 300 g/L 2,4-D Ester LV

  • Used for broadleaf weed control in wheat, barley and triticale

  • Target weed species include Wild Radish, Wild Turnip, Mustards, Volunteer Canola, Volunteer Legumes, Thistles

  • Application rate 600 – 820 ml/ha

  • Requires 0.5% Uptake Oil

  • 820 ml/ha rate costs $12.30/ha

  • Crop growth stage 5 leaf to second node

  • May be suitable for targeting broadleaf weeds where control has been delayed

  • Significantly more expensive compared to 2,4-D alone

Paradigm

  • Produced by Dow AgroSciences

  • Active ingredients 200 g/kg Halauxifen + 200 g/kg Florasulam

  • Used for broadleaf weed control in wheat, barley and triticale

  • Target weeds include Fumitory, Dead Nettle, Medics, Cleavers, Mustards, Wild Radish, Loosestrife, Milk thistle, Mallow, Toadrush

  • Application rate 25 g/ha

  • Requires addition of MCPA for effective control of many target weeds

  • 25 g/ha + 300 ml/ha MCPA LV 500 costs $15/ha

  • Crop growth stage 3 leaf to flag leaf emergence

  • May provide an option where broadleaf control has been delayed, especially when targeting Wild Radish, Fumitory and Toadrush
