Below are some comments on existing varieties based on client observations.

Wheat

Gregory

  • Very consistent variety across a range of soil types and rainfall zones

  • Likely to make up a large percentage of the wheat sown in 2015

  • Appears to maintain grain size in a range of conditions

  • More tolerant of heat at flowering compared to other varieties

Suntop

  • Yields well

  • Tends to have higher screenings compared to Gregory

  • Not suitable for strong country that does not have a full profile of moisture

Livingston

  • Consistent variety for mid-season sowing

  • Has performed well in a range of conditions

  • Only MR-MS for Stripe Rust

Spitfire

  • Reliable yield for later sowing

  • Tends to have relatively high protein

  • Difficult to thresh

Wedgetail

  • Main early sown grazing variety

  • Traditionally has performed well, but has been badly affected by BYDV in 2014

  • For 2015, area should be minimised and aphids managed

Canola

Gem

  • Has performed consistently well

  • Yield limited by lack of moisture in 2014

ATR Bonito

  • Yielded consistently well with relatively high oil

  • Likely to make up a large percentage of canola area in 2015

ATR Wahoo

  • Significantly longer season than ATR Gem and ATR Bonito

  • Appears to have high yield potential.

  • Limited by moisture in 2014

  • Possibly too late maturing for west of the Olympic Way

Stingray

  • Variable performance in 2015 due to maturity and environment rather than variety

  • Has the genetic potential to yield up to 2.0 t/ha

  • May have inadvertently suffered Clethodim damage in some areas during 2015 due to rapid advancement through the growth stages.

45Y88

  • Has high yield potential

  • Competitive with weeds

  • Seed costs increase business risk

Brown Manure Peas

Morgan

  • Not favoured by seed growers due to low grain yield

  • Long season, competitive with high dry matter production

  • Works well as brown manure

Parafield

  • Earlier maturing than Morgan

  • Reasonable dry matter production

  • Reasonable brown manure variety

Percy

  • Early maturity limits dry matter production

  • Requires early spraying to prevent grain forming in pods

  • Not ideal for brown manure
