Wheat Variety Notes (January 2012)
The following wheat variety notes provide some information on variety options for 2012.The information will be updated once NVT and other trial results are available from the 2011 season. The notes below do not contain all the varieties available but are ones to consider when looking for options to current varieties being used.
Long Season Wheat – Early Sown
EGA Wedgetail APH classification Dual purpose variety, similar to Wylah, with good grain recovery after grazing Generally exhibits a positive yield response to grazing Can be grown without grazing but crop biomass needs to be managed MR-MS to Stripe Rust, requires rust management
Bolac APH classification Suited to early sowing on heavy clay country or longer season areas R-MR to Stripe Rust Small grain size can be an issue, ie: screenings
Main Season Wheat
Longreach Gauntlet New release 2012 AH classification Mid to late maturity similar to Janz or Ellison MR to Stripe Rust MR-MS to Yellow Leaf Spot, suit wheat on wheat situations
Merinda AH classification Similar maturity to Janz Suited to irrigated situations MR-MS to Stripe Rust, requires rust management S to Yellow Leaf Spot, avoid sowing into cereal stubbles
EGA Gregory AH classification Widely adapted variety with good tolerance to heat at flowering MR to Stripe Rust Avoid sowing early on high fertility paddocks MS-S to Yellow Leaf Spot, avoid sowing into cereal stubbles
Lincoln AH classification R-MR to Stripe Rust MR-MS to Yellow Leaf Spot Good yielding variety but very susceptible to pre-harvest sprouting Sunguard is a possible replacement for Lincoln
Sunguard New release 2012 AH classification Suggested maturity similar to Lincoln MR to Stripe Rust MS-S to Yellow Leaf Spot Moderate crown rot tolerance Possible replacement for Lincoln and Livingston
Short Season Wheat – Late Sown
Spitfire Released 2011 APH classification Early to mid season maturity similar to Ventura Yield results similar to Ventura or Livingston MR to Stripe Rust MS-S to Yellow Leaf Spot, avoid sowing into cereal stubbles Possible replacement for Ventura and Livingston
Longreach Crusader APH classification Early maturity similar to Ventura MR to Yellow Leaf Spot, provides an option to sow into cereal stubble MR-MS to Stripe Rust, requires rust management
Livingston AH classification Early maturity, quicker than Ventura Likely to be downgraded in 2012 to MR-MS to Stripe Rust, therefore requiring rust management MS-S for Yellow Leaf Spot and Crown Rot, avoid sowing into cereal stubbles. Spitfire or Sunguard are possible replacement varieties
