There are a number of new wheat varieties to be released for the 2013 season. Suntop and LongReach Dart are two which have received some publicity in this area. Following are some characteristics of each: Suntop

  • Main season AH quality

  • Earlier maturing than EGA Gregory

  • Similar maturity to Janz

  • Has performed well in NVT Trials

  • Claimed high levels of resistance to the three rusts

  • Moderate acid soil tolerance

  • Low resistance to Yellow Leaf Spot and CCN

Suntop is a variety that may be a main season alternative for many clients

LongReach Dart

  • Early maturing AH quality

  • Slightly quicker than Ventura, LongReach Crusader and H45

  • Claimed good level of resistance to the three rusts

  • Provisional Yellow Leaf Spot rating of MR - MS (P)

  • Limited tillering variety

  • Claimed long coleoptile and high seedling vigour

LongReach Dart appears to be very early maturing. It may have a fit in low rainfall areas, or in situations where late sowing is required to manage resistant weeds, or early maturity is required in undersown pasture situations.
